Last night I hooked and landed the biggest striped bass i have ever seen alive and in person. According to my friends boga grip it weighed 53 pounds. i did not get a length. it ate, of all things, a magnum long-A chicken scratch bomber. This fish put up no fight at all, it literally just let me reel it in. She was blind in her left eye, with the eyeball taking on that milky glassed over nothingness which made her rather appear to be some sort of sea hag or something at least otherworldly. She was released after a few photos and a weigh, which i will say was not easy to do while standing in the water. it took two of us to lift her whole tail out of the ocean. I watched her swim away. Then i sat on a rock for the rest of the night with little to no interest in fishing and watched a friend make cast after cast into water in which he knew a 50 pound bass had recently been swimming. He went 0-4 on hookups.
"hey Pete, have you ever caught a 50?" "yeah, i caught one once..." holy fucking shit. thats what i get to say now.

Awesome shot. That vs 250 is a nice reel. I'd like to get one but it's a little rich for my blood, givent that I don't fish inshore as much as I used to. Congrats again Pete, and way to release it!
In all honesty keeping that fish never even crossed my mind. Its probably close to as old as I am! And I just love the van staal. Got it late last year and man does it liberate shore fishing. The fact that I don't ever have to worry about dunking my reel is a great relief in and of itself. But man it costs a pretty penny. Managed to swing a deal in mine though.
I said goddamn!
Whoa.
That is a large striped bass.
Congrats, Petey!
