this evening i got the brand new single tail hook on a new wooden swimming plug straightened out. i had never had this happen before, a solid piece of metal bending under the combined pressure of both pants shitting angler and fish. the moment "dinner" popped into my head the thing let me have it. i ate spagetti instead.
but wow, the intensity. heading out again to bath in some more.

i did some more. i think that these wooden plugs should come with some better quality hooks. these stock ones just can't cut it.
ha! i bet the bass laughed when they saw that happen
burley bastards

Cool story Pete. What kind of plug were you fishing?
i was using a 2 ounce gibbs deep diver. black. nightime. the return trip was fisheir than that afternoon. more straightened hooks, more landed fish. up to 42 inches. i fish barbless these days, and after fixing the bent hook proceeded to land a nice 38 inch fish hooked just on that barbless single. in my limited experience, them barbs ain't worth much beyond a poor hookset.
earlier i also landed a nice fish on a pencil popper. topwater is just about the best thing ever.
there are stories of these events on my blog
